Jamie Raskin: Marc, it’s a great pleasure to be with you and I’ve been looking forward to it. And welcome Congressman Jamie Raskin, it’s good to have you with us. And today we explore the deep connections between the loss of his dear son, Tommy, in the fight for the future of this nation. He’s a friend and I first met him when I was his dad’s student at the Institute for Policy Studies in 1967 and he was a precocious, sweet five year old.
And let me just say before I start and introduce you to Jamie Raskin, because I always do when I know somebody a little bit more than just as a guest I’ve never met before, is that Jamie Raskin is someone I have known for a while. It’s amazing how these two stories bend and touch. His work explores the depth for the tragedy and a hope that springs from confronting and wrestling with all of this, the tragedy from the heart from losing someone you love, the tragedy we all face collectively, the threat of losing our democracy, losing our future, our children’s future, to a right-wing, racist mob of authoritarians in our own nation. It’s a book that really touched my heart deeply as a father because he lost his beautiful son who permeates this book with the heart and touches the book deeply and winds his way through the fight to save our democracy. He joins me today to talk about his book, the one that was just published, Unthinkable: Trauma, Truth, and the Trials of American Democracy. But he still had a sense of humor despite the news, saying in his statement: “In addition to destroying cancer cells, chemotherapy impairs natural antibodies and undermines the body’s immune system.
He will undergo chemotherapy during the upcoming months, he said. Raskin said he plans to avoid unnecessary exposure to avoid COVID-19 and other severe illnesses. Recently, he was elected Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee for the 118th Congress, which begins Jan.

Weeks later, Raskin was lead impeachment manager for the House during the second impeachment trial of former president Donald Trump, relating to the events of Jan. 2020, after a long battle with depression. First, his son Tommy died by suicide in Dec. Raskin, who lives in Takoma Park, has gained national exposure for multiple reasons in recent years.
